Defiance Screen Shots

Opening Scene

During the the scene where the villagers are being rounded up, the camera zooms out to give the audience a wider view of what is happening. This is because a wider view of what is going on adds to the confusion and mayhem because it shows the audience the extent of what is happening.

In this scene, the camera remains in the same position while the actors walk past. This makes the audience feel as though they are actually there and have just stopped to look at what is going on.

In this scene the camera is just above floor level. This makes it appear that the audience is on the floor level with the actor. Also, because the audience cannot see the two German soldiers, it makes them seem superior to the audience, who are below them.

In this scene, the audience see a German soldier painting something onto the side of a barn door. Whilst he is doing this, more people walk across the screen, which can be seen on the left hand side of the shot. Since the camera is focusing on the soldier in the distance, the people walking across the screen are slightly blurred. This also adds to the confusion of the scene because it focuses on one aspect of what is happening but at the same time, the people walking across the screen add to the chaos.

This is a good shot because it seems that the audience is crouching down and looking up at the two German soldiers. This also makes them seem superior because the audience are on a lower level than they are and it makes it seem as though they are in the sights of the German Officer.

This scene shows someone being shot as they try to run from the Germans. The camera is at eye level so it gives the audience the feeling as though they are equal with the man is being shot. This plays on the emotions of the audience because they have seen someone who is like them be killed. Also, on the left hand side of the screen, there are lines running down it. This gives the film an old fashioned look.

The man then falls to the ground and the camera follows his fall. This seems as though you are actually looking down at him in a kind of Point of View shot. Once he has died, the name of the film, "Defiance" appears on his body. There is some irony in this as being killed is in no wat defiant.

The camera then shows a German soldier filming what is happening. Text then appears saying, "A true story". Since there is someone filiming the scene, it makes it look like that since it is a true story then the footage may be real.

The colour in the film then turns from black and white to colour. When it does this, the action speeds up and it seems as though there is more chaos and confusion. Also, when the colour changes, it makes the film seem more realistic because it is filmed in colour.
